Hella's retrofit cornering light for any car

Hella developed the first retrofit cornering light system in the world.

Motion Trends,
PR, July 2005.

The retrofit bend-lighting system DynaView Evo2 is only one of the numerous innovations Hella will be showing at the IAA 2005 in Frankfurt (15 to 25 September).

With the "DynaView Evo2" Hella has developed the first retrofit cornering light system in the world which switches on in addition to the low beam.

For this product, the lighting and electronics specialists have exploited the know-how from the development and production of various bend lighting and cornering light systems for the automotive industry.

Hella is the world market leader in this sector. "DynaView Evo2" combines the safety functions cornering light and fog light in compact round auxiliary headlamps which can be retrofitted to any passenger car/estate, off-road vehicle or mobile home.

"DynaView Evo2" is made up of 2 different auxiliary lamps and an electronic control unit safely located in the engine compartment.

"DynaView Evo2" is made up of two different auxiliary lamps (for right and left), each 90 mm in diameter, and an electronic control unit which is safely located in the engine compartment. The computer-calculated free-form reflectors have been specially designed for broad illumination of the areas alongside the front end of the vehicle.

The light is provided by extremely powerful H7 halogen bulbs. With the low beam switched on, the cornering light is activated without delay when the indicator is set or automatically when driving round bends at speeds up to 40 km/h.

Depending on requirements, either the right (in a right-hand bend) or left headlamp (in a left-hand bend) is switched on. When driving through bends, a yaw rate sensor measures the turning speed of the vehicle and supplies the switching pulse. After the bend, a dimmer gently switches the light level off again.

The cornering light provides additional safety when reversing, too: when the vehicle is put into reverse, both cornering lights switch on and illuminate the areas to the right and left of the vehicle broadly and brightly.

A further advantage of "DynaView Evo2": the auxiliary lamps are also approved as fog lamps and can be activated by means of a separate switch as required. In this mode of operation, both cornering lights are switched on together, providing additional safety when driving in foggy conditions.

Cornering light is activated without delay when the indicator is set or automatically when driving round bends at speeds up to 40 km/h.

The metal reflector of the cornering light auxiliary lamp is weather-sealed and resistant to external influences. With its real glass cover lens the style of the "DynaView Evo2" blends in perfectly with the front apron of modern vehicles. Apart from the two headlamps and two H7 halogen bulbs, the scope of supply of the "DynaView Evo2" set also includes the electronic IntelliBeam control unit, a pre-assembled professional cable harness, bracket and attachment material as well as detailed installation instructions.

Installation should be carried out by a qualified garage. Depending on the vehicle model, installation will take between two and four hours. "DynaView Evo2" from Hella is available now from well-stocked automotive parts dealers

Since April 6, 2005, auxiliary cornering light has been approved throughout Europe in connection with the low beam in accordance with the new ECE regulation 119. "DynaView Evo2" has of course been type tested and approved in accordance with this ECE regulation (and in accordance with the respective SAE standards for USA). The relevant certificate is included with each set.

In addition, "DynaView Evo2" has also been type approved in accordance with the guidelines of ECE regulation 19 for fog lamps. Hella documents this by the type approval number on the lower edge of the headlamp cover lens. The IntelliBeam control unit has CE marking and is also approved in accordance with ECE and SAE regulations.

Nomenclature of the type approval on the cover lens of the "DynaView Evo2" auxiliary lamp:

E1 Country where approval has been granted (E1 = Germany, KBA)
B 02 Approval as fog lamp in accordance with ECE regulation 19; change series 02
K 00 Approval as cornering light in accordance with ECE regulation 119, change series 00
1951 Number of approval in accordance with ECE
SAE FK 04

Approval as fog lamp in accordance with SAE (for USA)

TNK 110 Approval as cornering light in accordance with SAE (for USA)

Further highlights include the completely new prototype of an LED headlamp with dynamic LED cornering light, an electronic parking-assistant system, a concealed rain/light sensor, inductive-switching interior lamps and new combination rear-lamp technologies such as 3D light guides and an LED light-curtain.

HBPO front-end of the future - IFP (Integrative Front-End Philosophy) integrates more functions despite reduced weight and fewer components.

On a different level, the front-end specialist company HBPO, a Hella joint venture with Behr and Plastic Omnium, is presenting the innovative front-end of the future - IFP (Integrative Front-End Philosophy). It integrates even more functions despite reduced weight and fewer components, and shows ways to intelligently solve more stringent pedestrian-protection requirements.

Pedestrian protection - The front-end concept IFP from HBPO integrates innovative solutions for pedestrian protection, crash management, cooling and lighting as well as joint and sheer lines. An important element of improved pedestrian protection is the SFuse (Several Function Stiffener) protection from being run over.

This means that front-ends easily meet the increased requirements for lower leg impact according to Phase 2 (from 2010) of the European Directive 2004/102/EC for pedestrian protection. As the lower part of the front-end, the plastic component fulfills this function in the case of collision with the vehicle, it makes the body turn so that it glides away and over the hood rather than being run over.

SFuse (Several Function Stiffener) improve pedestrian protection and provide many other advantages in terms of mass, volume and functions.

In addition, SFuse as the second load path absorbs around 30 percent of the impact energy during the AZT crash. This allows the extension of the vehicle overhang otherwise required to meet the legally prescribed pedestrian-protection requirements of Phase 2 (from 2010) to be significantly shortened.

Further functions integrated by SFuse include air routing for brakes and engine cooling. In comparison with other simple metal components commonly in use until now for protection from being run over, SFuse can significantly reduce the weight (by 25 percent) and assembly time (by 40 percent) of these components.

Fog lights for the current Golf V - For owners of the current generation Golf V, Hella's tried and tested Micro DE fog light retrofit kit is now also available with radio remote control system.

Micro DE fog lights project the light of the H3 halogen bulb onto the road via a profiled glass lens with a light aperture of only 40 millimetres.

Micro DE fog lights guarantee significantly better visibility when driving, making orientation easier in poor visibility conditions. They project the light of the H3 halogen bulb onto the road via a profiled glass lens with a light aperture of only 40 millimetres. The advantages: exact beam pattern, broad carpet of light in front of the vehicle with firm edging, no scatter light which leads to driver self-glare in fog.

The vehicle-specific mounting is optimised by special Design covers, which saves time otherwise wasted on looking for a suitable installation position. Attachment is invisible to the existent series openings on the bumper. The vehicle covers are simply replaced by the Hella Design covers with Micro DE.

Micro DE signals are transmitted from the switch via radio waves.

The Micro DE fog light retrofit kit is supplied with the innovative Hella radio remote control system, making drilling holes and complex cable routing from the engine compartment to the passenger compartment a thing of the past.

The signals between the switch and Micro DE are transmitted without wires, via radio, thus dispensing with cable routing through the bulkhead between the passenger compartment and engine compartment.

Just like the fog light, the radio control system has both ECE approval (for Europe) and SAE approval (for USA), which means they do not require approval by the registration authorities nor have to be entered in the vehicle papers.

That the Micro DE combines quality and safety has been proved by comparative tests carried out by the specialist journals "Auto Zeitung" (issue 22 dated 9th October 2002) and "auto motor und sport" (issue 8 dated 4th April 2001) among others. The Micro DE was in 1st place in both these tests and was awarded the grade "highly recommended".
