Cabrio gets Audi's single-frame grille
7th September 2005.
The new Q7
is certainly one of the most important additions to Audi's
lineup, especially for the USA.
But certainly too, it won't be the only
novelty for this year' 61st IAA Frankfurt motor show
(15-25 September), as the ingolstadt-based carmaker will
be showing another niche model: the new A4
which gets the attractive facelift already applied to the
A4 sedan since last autumn.
The new open-top four-seater is
launched with four engines, three of which are being
offered for the Audi A4
cabrio for the very first
time. FSI and turbo FSI technology petrol engines, and the
three-litre TDI, already known in the A4, A6 and A8.
designed rear lights of clear-glass
Innovative technologies to be offered
with the new convertible include the optional xenon plus
headlights, with dynamic cornering lights as an option,
and the quattro permanent four-wheel drive.
Safety equipment will include a
two-stage driverís airbag and side airbags, the
latest-generation electronic stabilisation program ESP,
improved side impact protection and the active roll-over
protection system with two roll-over bars which are
projected behind the rear seats.
Design - The new front-end
styling reflects design elements of the Nuvolari quattro
coupť study, already found on all new Audi models.
Taut lines and clear surfaces around the shoulder line,
leading to a rear end distinguished by newly designed
lights of clear-glass.
The new steering wheels provides a new
visual touch, with an airbag cover similar to the
single-frame grille design of the front. Door sill trims
with aluminium inserts and numerous aluminium inlays are a
standard feature of all new A4 Cabriolet versions.
Inlays in Walnut, Fine grain birch wood grey or Fine grain
birch wood beige can be ordered as an alternative, like in
the other versions of the current A4 models.
electro-hydraulic hood can be operated at
a speed of up to 30 km/h.
A fully automatic, electro-hydraulic
hood can be operated when driving at a speed of up to
30 km/h. The hood comes with good thermal insulation
(an additional option offers an acoustic hood, with new
fabrics of greater material density, reducing the noise
level inside the cabin to virtually match that of the A4
saloon, even at fast motorway speeds) and glass rear
window, which offers better demist in winter when...
quattro permanent four-wheel drive improves the carís
safety and handling.
Engines - The two new petrol
engine additions to the A4 Cabriolet come with the FSI
direct injection technology: the normally aspirated 188 kW
(255 bhp) 3.2 FSI V6 and the turbocharged two-litre
four-cylinder 2.0 TFSI, which delivers 147 kW (200 bhp).
Petrol choices start from the 163 bhp (120 kW) 1.8T
already familiar from the previous model.
The TDI diesel range will comprise the
3.0 TDI V6 with common rail injection and piezo injectors,
delivering 171 kW (233 bhp), with a maximal torque of
450 Nm, available between 1,400 and 3,150 rpm.
The four engines are available either
with front-wheel drive, or with quattro permanent
on the photo to open the at-a-glance page.
Gearbox choices come (depending
on engine and drive versions) in:
- 5-speed and 6-speed manual gearboxes,
- continuously variable multitronic, which has seven
speeds in the tiptronic mode,
- 6-speed tiptronic transmission (with front-wheel drive
- The suspension system, with four-link front
and self-tracking trapezoidal-link rear suspension, has
been completely modified and numerous new components
added. Audiís chassis engineers have made extensive
changes in the area of elastokinematics, and to the spring
and shock absorber settings.
The steering has been completely
modified for a greater precision and better feedback from
the road when cruising. Several mountings as well as the
dimensions of the front and rear shock absorbers come from
the new Audi A6, while the rear trapezoidal links and the
front track rods originate from the S4, to enhance
agility, handling and comfort. The brakes, their
dimensions and consequently their performance have been
adapted to suit the potential of the new engines.
Equipment and trim -
Standard equipments include the electric hood and
automatic air conditioning with separate temperature
controls for driver and front passenger, electric windows,
electrically adjustable exterior mirrors and a central
locking system with remote control. The glass rear window
is heated and has a time switch.
All seats are equipped with three-point
inertia-reel belts (the front belts have belt-force
limiters and belt tensioners, plus a seat belt reminder
for the driver) and head restraints. The safety equipment
also includes a driverís airbag activated in two stages
and side airbags.
cornering lights become available as an
Optional extras list proposes xenon
headlights, which are combined as standard with daytime
running lights, dynamic cornering lights, light/rain
sensor to activate the dipped headlights and windscreen
wipers automatically if necessary.
Infotainment options include the DVD
navigation system plus, with MMI operating logic for
guidance and ergonomics. Interface geometry and menu
architecture are based on the MMI standard familiar from
the Audi A8 and A6.
There are 13 exterior colours
available, five of which are being offered for the first
time for the Audi A4
Cabriolet. The range also includes four hood colours and
three different tones for the headlining.
The wheel range comprises nine summer
and three winter wheels of up to 7.5 x 17 J in size, with
tyres up to 235/45 R 17. Additional versions up to 18
inches in size are available from quattro GmbH.
In addition, the Audi
S line range from quattro
GmbH proposes other visual and functional features for a
more sporty and personal touch.
