The BMW 320d turned
Into an M-style CLR3 RS... by Lumma

CLR3 RS: sporty and refined body styling with M look and a power boost.

Motion Trends,
15th March 2006.

You like the BMW 3-Series look, you like clean diesel... for obvious reasons - torque and power, not just economy - but many others do like both choices too.

Good taste has sometimes a major drawback: it's tempting for many others.

So how to solve the individuality versus common-sense dilemma?

One of the solutions can be found in tuning. And since we're talking about the BMW 320d - current E90 generation, the well-known BMW customiser Lumma might have something for you.

The German tuning specialist turns the current 3-series E90 into a CLR3 RS, through a styling, power and suspension kit.

That's the Lumma deal: a sporty and refined body styling kit with parts in M look, a power boost of 35 bhp and 55 Nm, and to express it all in an appropriate dynamism, a coilover suspension with 20-inch “Lumma Race” wheel set.

After attaching the Lumma body styling components, the 320d does not only look more powerful. Indeed, the heart of the CLR3 RS modifications is the power increase of the 4-cylinder, 16-valve, turbo-charged 2-litre diesel, from 163 to 198 bhp, compliments of the D-box (750 euros).

To avoid any vulgarisation of the sporty looks, Lumma has been careful to only emphasize and not to distort the lines of this 3-series saloon.

For example, with its racing grille and five air intakes, the front bumper made from PU RIM for 810 euros blends into the basic design, suggesting to the driver in front to... be nice and open the way.

By fitting the headlight lens covers of ABS plastic, Lumma lends the front of this BMW a more serious look, which should further improve its overtaking arguments.

For another 406 euros each, Lumma fits two extremely light wing assemblies from fibre-composite materials, with integrated louvres, reminiscent of the M version 3-series BMW.

The sporty theme continues on the sides with the electrically adjustable and heated sports mirrors in the M look for 599 euros, in addition to a set of side sills from PU RIM for 562 euros, which are attached to the original fastening points.

To help reduce lift on the rear-driven wheels, the rear end gets a roof edge spoiler (289 euros) and a three-piece rear spoiler lip – one section for the boot lid (opposite photos), and a section on each side of the rear (463 euros). With a licence plate holder secured with glue, it is possible to style the rear view of this 3-series BMW further in the M look.

To round things off, Lumma equips the standard-fitted rear apron with an attachment that simply oozes power (520 euros). Occupying its cutouts on the left and right are the two mirror-finished (and sporting the Lumma logo) 90 mm thick stainless steel pipes of a sports rear silencer, naturally with EC type approval.

Lumma further enhances the driving dynamics of this 3-series BMW by fitting a KW coilover suspension for 1199 euros.

To ice its cake, the BMW tuner equips the CLR3 RS with a set of  “Lumma Race” wheel rims in the dimension 9.5x20", with Kumho tyres sized 245/30-20 at the front and 285/25-20 at the rear. The price for the complete set of wheels starts from 5500 euros.
