Ford Kuga warming up for early 2008 launch

Kuga: new 'kinetic design' with 4WD or FWD.

15 September 2007.

Before its market launch first in Europe in early 2008, the all-new Ford Kuga compact (C segment, lower medium size category) crossover is making its first public presentation now in near production form, at the 62nd IAA Frankfurt Motor Show 2007 (13 - 23 September).

Inspired by the iosis X Concept that was revealed at the 2006 Paris Motor Show, Kuga shows Ford's new 'kinetic design' orientation, with a range to be available in 4-wheel drive ('intelligent' 4WD) or front-wheel drive (FWD) systems.

Technically based on the successful Ford Focus - Focus gets also a facelift with significant technical enhancements -, the new Kuga is the first crossover designed and developed in-house by Ford of Europe, for production at Ford's Saarlouis plant in Germany.

After the new S-Max (Car of the Year 2007 in Europe) joined the C-Max and Galaxy in Ford's minivan line-up, plus the all-new Mondeo sedan arrival, Ford of Europe's product portfolio is expanding again, in another new direction.

The new Ford Kuga is a compact 4WD crossover that promises dynamic on-road performance with substantial off-road ability. It will go on sale throughout Europe during the first half of 2008.

The Kuga will be available with an intelligent four-wheel-drive system for a dynamic ability, but will also be available as a front-wheel-drive only version.

Powertrain offers will feature Ford's 2.0-litre, 136 PS Duratorq TDCi common-rail diesel engine mated to a Durashift 6-speed manual transmission, but further details will be released closer to launch.

In design terms, Kuga follows the proportions and basic dynamic forms of the iosis X, with a paint finish in the same 'Ice White' body colour and the bold wheel arches with the same alloy wheels which will be available to customers as a 19-inch option.

Kuga's design aims to inspire strength and athleticism as key attributes of Ford's 'kinetic design' philosophy, through dynamic lines, full surfaces and muscular presence. The athletic form language is highlighted with the bold kinetic graphics such as the trapezoidal front grills, rising belt-line and kick-up of the rear window graphic and the swept back headlamp shapes.

Ford Kuga compact crossover: panoramic roof.

Like the Focus, the Kuga will offer the panoramic roof option.

For the production Kuga, the coupé-like roof profile of the iosis X Concept has been adjusted to a slightly higher silhouette for a more comfortable accommodation of its five passengers.

The luggage compartment is accessed via a split tailgate with divided rear lights, providing its widest possible opening for loading and unloading.

The rear end design also incorporates the graphic elements of 'kinetic design' such as the high mounted tail lamps, facetted rear glass and sculptured rear bumper. The rear bumper neatly integrates the tailpipes into the contours of the diffuser.

The interior has a spacious feel which can be enhanced even more with optional large panoramic glass roof.

The instrument panel and centre stack converge into a generous centre console for maximum accessible storage, contributing to a comfortable surrounding for the driver and front seat passenger. The high seat and shoulder line position of the doors give a light and airy environment while providing the driver a commanding view of the surroundings.

The materials chosen for Kuga's interior include, like the iosis X Concept, technical materials and fine leathers with orange piping. The Ebony interior is set off by the centre console and details in the door, with many personalization possibilities.

Last but not least, the new Blaupunkt navigation system which incorporates a 7" colour display also transmits images from a rear view camera incorporated into the tailgate. This new feature, to aid reversing manoeuvres, will find its way to the production version of the Kuga.
