30 May 2008.

Following a successful year in which it delivered 6,465 new road cars worldwide (+14% over 2006), Ferrari (2,926 employees at the end of 2007) is starting to show the first official photos of the California, its new model to be displayed at the Mondial de l'Automobile this October in Paris (Additional Ferrari California photos with details at  1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5).

California, all-aluminium, like all current Ferrari models.

For the first time in its history, the Prancing Horse will launch the new model with a new V8 engine mounted in the mid-front position, as well as a folding hard top that changes it to either a coupé or a convertible within 14 seconds, at the touch of a button.

The new California joins in the prestige sporty Grand Tourer segment, under the flagship Ferrari 612 Scaglietti (V12), and in the same time, within the Prancing Horse’s 8-cylinder family (F430).

Combining coupé and spider in one Ferrari: the California.

The 4,300 cc V8 engine features direct fuel injection and generates 460 hp at 7,500 rpm (107 hp per 1000cc), allowing the California to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 4.0 seconds, with its new 7-speed dual clutch transmission coupled to the traditional Ferrari transaxle layout. Fuel emissions are expected to be around 310 g/km CO2, with a fuel consumption average (ECE combined cycle) of 13.2 litres per 100 km.

This is the first time that the new 7-speed dual clutch has been used on a Ferrari car. The Italian company claims that the system utilised on the California cuts the gear shifting time to zero (or very close to zero second). Performance is further boosted by the new Launch Control button. When hit, it delivers even faster starts by adjusting torque delivery and preventing tyre spin during acceleration.

Retractable hard top turns the coupe into a spider in 14 seconds.

As the latest addition to the new generation of Ferraris launched in 2004 with the 612 Scaglietti (arabic article), the California chassis and bodywork are also aluminium, like the rest of the current range.

Ferrari says the California has been aerodynamically designed to deliver significant downforce values (70 kg at 200 km/h).

Amongst other innovations, the new Ferrari coupé / spider will feature a "2+" concept which should allow additional versatility in the rear of the car.

The California body is 4560mm long. That's 48mm longer than the F430, 105mm shorter than the 599 GTB and 342mm shorter than the 612 Scaglietti.

Width is 1900mm, 23mm less than the F430, 62mm less than the 599 GTB and 57mm narrower than the 612 Scaglietti.

Purity of lines, Pininfarina design.

The new California has a wheelbase of 2700mm, 100mm more than the F430, 50mm shorter than the 599 GTB and 250mm shorther than the 612 Scaglietti.

Boot (trunk) volume reaches 360-litre capacity when the roof is up (as a coupé), or 260-litre when it is down (luggage compartment volume is 250 litres in the F430 coupe and spider). For additional practicality, and as a first for Ferrari, the boot and cabin communicate directly.

Comfort should be further enhanced by a new multilink rear suspension system while the Brembo brakes will feature standard carbon-ceramic material discs.

Modern technology and power in nostalgic design cues.

The California will also be equipped with the exclusive F1-Trac traction control system which made its debut on the 599 GTB Fiorano.

After the typical Ferrari red, the latest photos show the California in (Azzurro) azure blue. Azzurro California was the colour chosen for the legendary 1960s spider’s appearance at the New York Auto Show in 1962. It proved one of the favourites with owners of that model too.
