New Porsche 911 Carrera and Carrera S
Direct fuel injection and 7-speed double-clutch gearbox

New Porsche Carrera 911 Coupé with direct petrol injection and 7-speed gearbox.

New 911 Carrera and Carrera S: more power and acceleration.

APN,
06 June 2008.

Before celebrating the 60th anniversary of the official approval and homologation for road service of the first Porsche prototype (June 8, 1948), the German sports cars maker has just announced the introduction of four new models in the 911 model series: two coupés and two cabriolets / convertibles - rear-wheel drive versions - with enhanced dynamic performance.

The major innovations - from 5 July - come from the first introduction of direct fuel injection on a Porsche sports car (on the flat-six power units displacing 3.6 and 3.8 litres) as well as the new optional double-clutch gearbox Porsche-Doppelkupplung (PDK).

The new Porsche-Doppelkupplung (PDK), Porsche’s double-clutch gearbox.

The new 7-speed PDK gearbox replaces the former Toptronic S.

With the new PDK gearbox, the Carrera Coupé gets a fuel economy of 9.8 litres/100 kilometres (24 US mpg, 28.8 mpg imp.). All new Carreras remain significantly below the fuel consumption benchmark of 11 litres/100 kilometres (21.41 US mpg, 25.7 mpg imp.), bringing CO2 emissions down by up to 15 per cent.

Maximum output of the 911 Carrera with its 3.6-litre power unit is up by 20 hp to 345 hp (254 kW, 341 bhp). Output on the 911 Carrera S with its 3.8-litre power unit is up by 30 hp to 385 hp (283 kW, 380 bhp). The Carrera S Coupé now offers a top speed of slightly over 300 km/h or 186 mph.

The new 911 will be available for the first time with the new Porsche-Doppelkupplung (PDK), Porsche’s double-clutch gearbox, with seven forward gears, combining the comfort of an automatic transmission with the dynamic gearshift of a sequential racing gearbox.

The Carrera Cabriolet retails at Euro 78,000.

Thanks to its automatic gearshift function, the new PDK gearbox replaces the former Porsche Tiptronic S automatic transmission on both the Carrera and Carrera S, improving acceleration while reducing fuel consumption.

Porsche underlines the fact that 25 years ago, it developed its gearshift principle for motorsport applications with two clutches to shift gears without any interruption of traction and pulling power and without even the slightest break in between gears. This enabled its works drivers to accelerate faster than their competitors and keep both hands on the steering wheel while shifting gears.

The new double-clutch gearbox gives better performance.

With that technical background and expertise, the new Porsche double-clutch gearbox gives the new 911 Carrera better performance: equipped with seven-speed PDK, the Carrera Coupé accelerates in 4.5 seconds from 0-100 km/h, 0.2 seconds faster than with a manual six-speed gearbox. PDK can also be combined with Porsche’s optional Sport Chrono Plus including Launch Control, dropping the 0-100 km/h to 4.3 seconds.

The new 911 brings also design enhancements to both front and rear, with new lights. LED daytime driving lights and bi-xenon headlights become now standard on all new models in the Carrera range, interacting with new LED rear lights. Porsche now also offers the Dynamic Bending Lights option for all models.

Official prices start at 69,600 euros for the Carrera (Euro base price). The Carrera Cabriolet and Carrera S both retail at 78,000 euros, and the Carrera S Cabriolet at 88,000 euros.
