Four frameless windows and coupé-like roofline.

 Exterior

Consistent with its concept, the exterior design message is clear: versatility, dynamism and elegance, particularly with the four frameless windows and the coupé-like stretched roofline. It is the first large-scale production car from BMW to feature frameless windows in aluminium shell structures, reducing weight, with the aluminium engine compartment lid and front spring struts on the body, by 28 kg or 62 lb.

With the typical low-slung BMW kidney grille, the front gets large air intakes and dual round headlights. Apart from the direction indicators, the corona rings on the headlights come for the first time with LED light units.

The standard rings serve as the car’s positioning lights. With the optional xenon headlights, the LED units of the light rings may be operated in two stages: dimmed to about 10 per cent of their full power (as positioning lights) or at full power (as daytime running lights in brilliant white).

The brake lights and the direction indicators are also made up of LED light units. The waistline extends from the headlights to the rear light clusters, while the two outer rooflines as well as the shoulder lines come together in the airflow spoiler on the tailgate, giving a sleek, fastback-like rear end. The flared wheel arches complete the BMW brand signature.

Slightly elevated front seats and 3- or 2- passenger rear seats.

 Interior

The horizontally subdivided dashboard comes with a cockpit featuring Black Panel technology and a Control Display for the iDrive system, measuring 7.5" (standard) or 10.2" (with the optional Professional navigation system).

The front seats are slightly elevated. Legroom at the rear is the same as in the BMW 7 Series, headroom is equal to that of the BMW X5, while the tilt angle of the rear-seat backrests is individually adjustable.

The standard rear seat is a bench for three passengers with individual adjustment of seat four-and-aft position (up to 100 millimetres or almost 4") as well as the backrest angle on all seats.

The 5 Series GT can be optionally ordered with two single seats at the rear, in which case fore-and-aft adjustment of the seat position as well as the backrest angle, the upper section of the backrest and the height of the headrest is all-electric.

This configuration gets a standard centre console separating the two single seats and accommodating cup holders, a storage box and other facilities.

BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo: dashboard with lighting.

Ambience illumination with bands of light in the dashboard.

The standard ambience illumination of the interior features bands of light integrated in the dashboard beneath the trim bar, generating indirect illumination in a warm shade of orange. Light bands are also placed beneath the trim bar around the door panels, discreetly illuminating the armrests.

The ambient light effect may be further enhanced with optional illuminated entry bars, light bands in the centre console at the front and behind the vertical trim bars at the rear, as well as further sources of light in the area of the centre armrest, the door pockets and on the backs of the front-seat backrests.
