 Black Panel

BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo: black panel.

Black Panel technology with four circular instruments in the traditional style of a sports car, with status and function displays, navigation readings and other messages.

The standard instrument cluster is made up of a high-resolution colour display in Black Panel technology, presenting four circular instruments in the traditional style of a sports car, with status and function displays, navigation readings, information from the check/control unit, feedback from the control buttons and the service interval indicator relevant to the driver.

Black Panel technology provides precise and sophisticated presentation of all important information. As the numbers on the circular dials are shown electronically, they are visible only when the system is activated, like the signals for fuel consumption, the remaining range the vehicle is able to cover and other symbols on the display. When not in use, the display forms a homogeneous, black surface.

With the optional navigation system Professional, the instrument cluster comes with a wider range of individual functions.

  iDrive

Measuring either 7.5 inches in its standard version or, in conjunction with the optional Professional navigation system, 10.2 inches, the Control Display for the iDrive system is integrated in the middle as a free-standing element in the dashboard.

Together with the central air vent, a storage box and the centre console with the control units for the audio and climate functions also in Black Panel technology, the Control Display forms a vertical axis from top to bottom.

The display can also present information on route guidance and recommended lanes provided by one of the optional navigation systems.

The standard iDrive system combines the control for all entertainment, information, navigation and telecommunication functions, the standard as well as the optional ones. The Controller allows selection and activation of functions through standardised tipping, turning and pressing movements. An image of the Controller shown in the Control Display as well as the menu structure help in choosing the next step in the operating process.

Using the direct selection buttons on the Controller, the driver or front passenger can change between the CD, radio, telephone and navigation functions, the range of direct selection buttons being rounded off by the three MENU, BACK and OPTION keys.

Eight "favourite" buttons on the centre console allow the user to save and directly select radio stations, telephone numbers, navigation destinations and other menu items available via iDrive.

Another feature of iDrive is the multi-mode control of functions by voice entry and by the Controller. The user may change from one of these two entry modes to the other, even while handling a specific task or operation, with voice entry as well as the Controller remaining active at the same time for simultaneous use.

  EfficientDynamics

All 5 Series Gran Turismo variants get the BMW EfficientDynamics technologies (varying from one model to the other according to its profile. More details: 1, 2, 3). They include Brake Energy Regeneration, lightweight technology, optimised aerodynamics including active management and control of the air flaps and, finally, tyres with minimum roll resistance for better fuel economy and emission management as well as on-demand control of the cars ancillary units such as the electrical coolant pump, the electrical steering assistance pump, the map-controlled oil pump and the detachable a/c compressor.

  Brakes and DSC

The brake system (standard inner-vented brake discs) features the DSC Dynamic Stability Control with its range of functions, including ABS anti-lock brakes, ASC Automatic Stability Control, TSC Trailer Stability Control, CBC Cornering Brake Control and DBC Dynamic Brake Control maximising brake pressure on both axles in emergency braking. Under extremely high brake temperatures, brake pressure increases to prevent fading (loss of brake power).

The Regular Dry Braking function optimises brake performance in the wet (very light and imperceptible application of the brakes at regular intervals, to keep the discs dry), while the Brake Standby builds up moderate brake pressure as soon as the driver abruptly takes his foot off the gas pedal, for faster brake action whenever required. The Start-Off Assistant helps the driver set off smoothly on an uphill gradient by preventing the car from rolling backwards. Cruise control with an integrated brake function uses the automatic build-up of brake pressure via DSC to provide speed control at all times.

  Adaptive brake lights

To help prevent collisions from behind, the 5 Series Gran Turismo is equipped with an enhanced version of the Adaptive Brake Lights. When the driver presses down the brake pedal hard with ABS intervening, following motorists are urged by the brake lights conspicuously flashing on and off to apply their brakes as hard as they can. If the driver is really braking all-out, even the hazard warning flashers are automatically activated once the car comes to a standstill.

  E.M. parking brake

The 5 Series Gran Turismo also comes with a parking brake operated either electromechanically or hydraulically. With the engine running, the parking brake effect is generated by active build-up of pressure in the hydraulic system controlled by the DSC Dynamic Stability Control. Then, as soon as the driver switches off the engine, the parking brake effect is generated electromechanically.

With the engine running, the driver can automatically build up an emergency braking function by pulling the parking brake knob just a bit longer. The brake effect itself is generated by actively building up hydraulic pressure on all four wheels, the degree of stopping power being controlled by the DSC control unit, taking the ABS function into account. The brake lights are also activated in the process.

The electromechanical parking brake comes with an Auto-Hold function to enhance motoring comfort in stop-&-go traffic. As soon as the car comes to a standstill, it is automatically held in position like on a gradient until the driver presses the gas pedal again, without requiring him / her to keep the brake pedal down all the time while the car is held in position.

The Auto-Hold function is activated and deactivated by a separate knob on the centre console.
