Hyundai ix35: sleeker styling with enhanced aerodynamics.

4 Sep. 2009 - The new Hyundai ix35 compact crossover will be unveiled at this year's Frankfurt motor show (public days 17-27 September), before going on sale in spring 2010.

Having its first official pictures released recently, the new compact (C-segment, lower medium) ix35 crossover
is the replacement of the equally compact Hyundai Tucson crossover, the brother of Kia's compact Sportage (Kia is part of the Hyundai-Kia Automotive Group).

The ix35 interior looks young and tidy.

The new ix35 (debuted in the Korean market earlier this month), which brings design cues that will be carried over to other new Hyundai models, most notably the pronounced hexagonal grille which will become a recognisable family attribute, competes against compact crossover SUVs such as the Ford Kuga, Toyota RAV-4, VW Tiguan and others.

However, the ix35 also has a smaller footprint than C-segment hatchbacks and MPVs, with a sleek styling which contributes to enhanced aerodynamics.

Hyundai says that thanks to its enhanced aerodynamics and powertrain technology, the ix35 should get better fuel efficiency and lower CO2 emissions than the previous model, competing even with mainstream hatchbacks in terms of running costs.

More details about the ix35 will be announced at the 2009 IAA Frankfurt auto show.

 Blue Drive

Hyundai will also exhibit in its Blue Drive Zone at the show, its new eco-friendly technologies and products aimed at lowering emissions and improving the fuel economy of its vehicles, which are comparable to Kia's ‘EcoDynamics’ approach.

In its world debut, the first exhibit presents the Hyundai ix-Metro, a new Hybrid Electric CUV for the European sub-B segment. It promises CO2 emissions of just 80g/km.

The fifth in a series of concept cars to be produced by the Global Design Team in Namyang Korea, the ix-Metro is powered by an inline three-cylinder petrol engine displacing just one-litre. Direct injection, dual CVVT and turbocharging combine with a six-speed dual clutch transmission to make for a potent compact package.

The other world debut Hyundai will be making at Frankfurt is the i10 Electric, a production-ready zero emissions vehicle which is set to go on sale in Korea in the second half of 2010.

Powered by a 49kW motor and a 16kWh battery, the i10 Electric promises a driving range of 100 miles (160 km) and top speed of over 80 mph (129 km/h.

The i10 Electric accepts two recharging cycles:

- a 220V household current which is slower but potentially advantageous if recharging is done during off-peak hours when utility rates are lower and,

- a 415V industrial-strength current which promises quicker recharging speeds. Under the quick cycle, the battery can be recharged to within 85 percent of its capacity in 15 minutes.

Under the normal cycle using a 220V household current, 100 percent power will be attained within five hours.

Two other Blue Drive vehicles, which made their world debut earlier this year at the Seoul Motor Show, will be shown in Frankfurt: the Elantra LPI Hybrid (see also its cousin, the Kia Forte LPI Hybrid) which emits 94g/km of CO2 (European combined mode) and the Blue Will Plug-In Hybrid Electric concept vehicle.

Hyundai says that its Elantra LPI HEV is the world's first hybrid electric vehicle to be powered by liquid petroleum gas and the first production car to be powered by advanced lithium ion polymer batteries (LiPoly).

Also on display will be the updated Santa Fe, fitted with a 2.2 version of the all-new, R diesel and comes with the option of the new six-speed automatic. A 2.0 version of the new R diesel will be available in the ix35, also with a six-speed automatic transmission.

A new i30 Blue edition, designed in Germany and built in the Czech Republic, will also debut in Frankfurt, featuring fuel-saving and emissions reducing stop-and-go technology. The i30 1.6 CRDi with ISG generates just 113g/km of CO2.
