Hyundai Veloster: one door on the driver's side...

15 October 2011 : Hyundai Motor UK Ltd announed yesterday the prices of the new Veloster compact coupe, which will bring in February 2012 its distinctive 1+2 door configuration with a 1.6-litre four-cylinder GDI petrol engine (140PS), a six-speed manual gearbox or Hyundai’s first dual-clutch transmission (DCT), with CO2 emissions expected from 137g/km (with the Blue Drive version) and a combined fuel economy of 47.9 UK mpg (equivalent to 39.89 US mpg, 5.9 litres/100 km, 16.96 km/litre conversion based on figures).

... and two doors on the passenger's side.

UK prices will start from GB£17,995 (on the road, with an insurance group rating of 16E) for the Veloster with the six-speed manual gearbox (CO2 emissions from 148g/km), and £19,245 for the six-speed DCT (CO2 emissions from 145g/km).

 The 3rd Door

To combine the style of a coupe with a hatchback functionality, Veloster features an additional passenger-side door to ease rear-seat access. The passenger-side rear door handle is hidden to maintain the coupe design.

The Veloster will be available in two main trim levels, Veloster and Veloster Sport, both powered by the 1.6-litre four-cylinder GDI (for gasoline direct injection) petrol engine, generating 140PS (138 bhp, 103 kW).

Hyundai’s Blue drive technologies, incorporating Intelligent Stop & Go technology and low rolling resistance tyres will also be available (GB£18,345).

 Gamma 1.6L

The all-new Gamma 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine is the smallest Hyundai engine to use Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI). It delivers a peak output of 138 horsepower (U.S. specs figures) at 6,300 rpm and maximum torque of 123 lb.-ft. (166.7 Nm) at 4,850 rpm

The new Gamma also features Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing (D-CVVT), an electronic throttle control, a roller timing chain, variable induction and anti-friction coatings.

The South Korean manufacturer says that its D-CVVT (intake and exhaust camshaft phaser) camshafts and hydraulic engine mounts aim to provide optimum power, efficiency and refinement. Using CVVT on both camshafts improves performance (with the increased volumetric efficiency), fuel economy (reduced pumping loss) and reduce hydrocarbon emissions.

Hyundai’s all-new, six-speed EcoShift dual-clutch transmission (DCT) incorporates a Hillstart Assist Control (HAC) to minimize rolling backwards on steep ascents.

Standard features will include 17” alloy wheels, a 7” Touch screen media centre (with capability of playing games through consoles and films from smart phones), Bluetooth Connectivity with voice recognition, climate control air conditioning, reversing sensors, front and rear fog lights and LED daytime running lights, a stereo RDS Radio/CD Player with MP3/WMA compatibility and an iPod connection, with the ability to control all functions on the leather steering wheel.

A media pack - containing touch screen satellite navigation with rear view parking camera, Parking Guidance System and 7 speakers including Amp and subwoofer – and red leather interior are available as options on the Sport version only.

 USA Veloster

In the USA, the Veloster is available since last month at prices starting from $17,300 (plus $760 freight charge) for the six-speed manual and $18,550 for the six-speed EcoShift Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT). With the U.S. specifications, fuel consumption figures come at:

- 28/40/32 US mpg with the six speed manual, equivalent to 33.6/48/38.4 UK mpg, 8.4/5.88/7.35 litres/100 km, or 11.9/17/13.6 km/litre,

The Veloster rides on a 104.3-inch (2649mm) wheelbase, with an overall length of 166.1 inches (4219mm) and width of 70.5 inches (1790mm). Its total interior volume is 105.3 cubic feet (2982 litres, or 2.98 cubic metres).

The American specifications of the Veloster include a standard Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) system which manages ESC (Electronic Stability Control) and the Motor-Driven electric Power Steering (MDPS) to apply steering assist when necessary (it can automatically provide eight Newton meters of counter steering). VSM reacts the same way during sudden lane changes or fast cornering.

The braking package includes four-wheel disc brakes, an Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) with Brake Assist, and Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD). The latter automatically adjusts the braking force to front and rear axles based on vehicle loading conditions.

All Hyundai vehicles sold in the U.S. are covered by the Hyundai Assurance program, which includes the 5-year/60,000-mile fully transferable new vehicle warranty, Hyundai's 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty and 5-years of complimentary Roadside Assistance.
