29 Nov. 2011: Following the reveal of the Subaru BRZ Concept - STI earlier this month at the 2011 Los Angeles International Auto Show in California, USA, Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. (FHI), the Japanese maker of Subaru automobiles announced today that the world premiere of its Subaru BRZ (display model) will take place at the 42nd Tokyo Motor Show 2011 (public days from December 3 to 11).

The new announcement comes with additional information about the Subaru BRZ coupé, which was co-developed with Toyota Motor Co. (owner of 16.5% of FHI). The Toyota GT 86 will also be unveiled at the Tokyo motor show.

With production beginning this spring, the Subaru BRZ is, as already announced for the BRZ Concept - STI version and the Toyota GT 86, a rear-wheel drive sports car featuring a naturally aspirated, horizontally-opposed boxer engine (or flat-four). The Subaru-developed boxer engine in the BRZ (the D-4S injection system is a Toyota development) was positioned lower than in other Subaru models so that the BRZ gets one of the lowest possible centres of gravity on the market today. Toyota says that its GT 86 centre of gravity is at 460mm.

The new 2+2 coupe has its low-mounted boxer engine on a specially designed sub-frame that forms a very low centre of gravity with a low driving position typical of a sports car.

Overall height of the Subaru BRZ is 1,300 mm with a wide (1775mm) and low (1300mm) body of a real coupé, while it still allows for 2+2 seating and a trunk with "ample" space (figures not announced yet).

Subaru adds that the low centre of gravity package allowed a low hood design, which comes with bulging front fenders. Aesthetics and aerodynamics meet through areas such as the C-pillar shape, rear glass inclination and trunk lid layout. The front and rear overhangs are short to enhance liveliness. At the rear, the projecting rear wheel arches contrast with the compact cabin.

 Engine

Small steering wheel, tachometer with digital speedometer in the center, 2+2 interior with bespoke sports car seats in a lowered position to help push down the center of gravity.

The newly developed engine for the BRZ has square bore and stroke of 86 by 86 mm. Toyota’s direct injection and port injection technology “D-4S” was incorporated in the BRZ’s power unit. To achieve the “ultra-low centre of gravity package”, the engine as a whole has been made more compact by adopting a shorter intake manifold and a shallower oil pan.

Subaru's BRZ maximum output is announced at 147 kw / 200hp / 197 bhp (at 7000 rpm in the Toyota GT 86 figures) with a maximum torque of 205 Nm / 20.9 kg-m / 151 lb-ft (at 6,600rpm in the GT 86 figures).

The gearbox is either a 6-speed manual transmission (MT) with a short stroke shift lever, or a 6-speed automatic (AT) featuring “S” and “M” modes, with paddle shift and downshifting blipping control.

 Chassis

The lightweight body was developed with a frame structure rigidity which is optimized for drivability, durability and safety. High tensile steel was used in the body to save weight, especially in the upper structure to lower the centre of gravity. The front hood is made of aluminium, with a structure fine-tuned for a low styling and to improve pedestrian protection.

All these structural measures should contribute to the promised direct and sharp response of the BRZ to steering input, along with the front suspension struts for light-weight and high rigidity – the front strut mount was lowered while maintaining the stroke – and the double wishbone layout at the rear for better shock absorption.

The tires are 215/45R17 with lightweight and rigid aluminium wheels, and all models are equipped with electronic stability control.
