Fourth-generation Honda CR-V compact SUV
More dynamic looks with new Real Time AWD

New CR-V: more dynamic and loyal to its compact formula.

02 December 2011: Only a few weeks after its debut at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show last month, Honda's all-new, fourth-generation CR-V compact SUV goes on sale today in Japan, in two weeks at Honda dealerships in the USA, then in autumn 2012 in Europe.

With over five million CR-V units sold since the launch of its first generation in Japan in 1995, the all-new, five-passenger CR-V remains loyal to its exterior's compact formula in the entry SUV segment.

Body length is slightly shorter than the outgoing CR-V.

The 2012 CR-V body adopts a more dynamic appearance than the previous generation. Body length is 178.5 inch (4533mm), 0.8-inches shorter than the outgoing CR-V.

Overall width remains at 71.6 in. (1819mm), just like the wheelbase at 103.1 in. (2619mm). Height (65.1 in. / 1653mm on EX version) is 1.0-inch lower on AWD models and 1.4 inches lower on FWD. The ground clearance is 6.7 inches (170mm) for the AWD models and 6.3 inches (160mm) for the front-wheel-drive ones.

The passenger volume in the LX version is 104.1 cu-ft. (2948 litres), or 101.5 cu-ft. (2874 litres) in the EX and EX-L versions.

Cargo volume with the rear seat up/down is 37.2/70.9 cu-ft. (1053 / 2008 litres). The new and standard Easy Fold-Down 60/40 Split Rear Seat is designed to enhance practicality, with each side of the rear seat folding nearly flat into the front of the cargo area using one of the release levers located near the tailgate, or a pull-strap positioned on the seat side.

The company says that the suspension system uses a front MacPherson strut design and a rear multi-link suspension to maximize rear seating and cargo space, with good handling characteristics and ride quality. Higher-capacity shock absorbers compared to the previous model enhance driving feel.

All CR-Vs (USA market specifications) come with the all-aluminium, 2.4-liter i-VTEC (Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control) 16-valve (DOHC) 4-cylinder engine (2354cc) with 185 horsepower (SAE net, +5 horsepower than previously) at 7000 rpm.

The gasoline (petrol) engine, which has a sequential multi-port (indirect) fuel injection, also got a slight increase of its maximal torque to 163 lb-ft. (221 Nm) at 4400 rpm (+ 2lb-ft. / 2.7 Nm).

Standard 5-speed automatic transmission.

With the standard 5-speed automatic transmission, and based on 2012 EPA mileage estimates, the front-wheel-drive CR-V is rated at 23/31/26 US mpg city/highway/combined, whihc is the equivalent of 27.6/34.2/31.2 UK mpg, or 10.2/7.6/9.05 litres/100km, or 9.8/13.2/11.05 km/litre (conversions are based on figures), with an increase of +2/+3/+2 US mpg compared to the 2011 CR-V.

The AWD version comes at 22/30/25 mpg city/highway/combined (UK mpg: 26.4/36/30, litres/100km: 10.7/7.8/9.4, km/litre: 9.35/12.75/10.63), with an increase of +1/+3/+2 US mpg compared to the 2011 CR-V.

Honda says that compared to the previous-generation Real Time 4WD, the new (optional) Real Time AWD with Intelligent Control System provides a better performance in rain, snow, dirt roads and dry pavement. The electronically controlled all-wheel-drive system replaces the previous-generation CR-Vs Real Time 4WD, a mechanically-activated dual-pump system that required a small degree of wheel slip to activate.

On other safety sides, every CR-V gets standard  4-channel ABS, Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist, VSA electronic stability control system (standard in the USA since 2005), side-curtain airbags, front-side airbags with a passenger-side OPDS (Occupant Position Detection System) and a front seat design that can help reduce the severity of neck injury in the event of a rear collision.

New high-tech features on all models include a Bluetooth phone interface (previously optional), a full-colour Multi-Information Display (i-MID, which offers customizable features via fingertip controls on the steering wheel), a multi-angle rearview camera with guidelines, an SMS text messaging function, which can read received texts from compatible cell phones aloud over the audio system, and a Pandora Internet Radio interface compatible with the Apple iPhone, which works with the vehicle's audio controls and i-MID.

The new CR-V line-up starts with the LX model, which includes standard air conditioning, cruise control, Bluetooth HandsFreeLink, i-MID, remote entry, 160-watt / 4-speaker audio system and Motion-Adaptive Electric Power Steering (EPS).

The SMS text messaging function can read received texts from compatible cell phones aloud over the audio system, or send an automatic pre-saved message like: "Talk to you later, I'm driving now", "I'm on my way", "OK"...

The Motion-Adaptive EPS works with the standard VSA and Electric Power Steering to correct instability in slippery road conditions both during cornering and under braking, by automatically initiating steering inputs that prompt the driver to steer in the correct direction.

The steering ratio comes slightly larger on the new CR-V models at 16.7 to 1 (previously 15.7:1 in 2011), which should provide smoother reactions with 3.2 turns lock-to-lock (previously 3.0 in 2011), while the turning diameter (curb-to-curb) is reduced from the previous 37.8 ft. (11.52 metre) to 37.0 ft. / 11.28 metre (37.3 ft.  / 11.37 metre on EX). All 2012 CR-V models have a tilt-and-telescope steering wheel.

The CR-V EX adds more equipment, including an upgraded six-speaker audio system, power moonroof and 17-inch alloy wheels.

The CR-V EX-L equipment list includes a leather-trimmed interior, 10-way power driver's seat, automatic dual-zone climate control and 328-watt 7-speaker audio system with XM (needs a subscription) Radio.

Available options for the CR-V EX-L include the Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System (available in the United States, except Alaska)  with Voice Recognition and FM Traffic, or a DVD Rear Entertainment System (not available with Navigation). Real Time AWD with Intelligent Control System is available as an option on any model.

CR-V EX and EX-L models are equipped with 225/65R17 all-season tires with 17x6.5-inch aluminium alloy wheels. The CR-V LX comes with 215/70R16 all-season tires with 16x6.5-inch stamped steel wheels.

The 2012 Honda CR-V is covered by a 3-year/36,000-mile new-car limited warranty, a 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain limited warranty, and a 5-year/unlimited-mile corrosion limited warranty.
