New SL 63 AMG roadster: reduced weight and consumption.

25 February 2012, Elie Aoun: German premium auto maker Mercedes-Benz will launch this May the high-performance version of its new SL roadster, the SL 63 AMG, from 157,675 (German prices, incl. 19% VAT), and 189,269 for the "Edition 1" version.

For comparison purposes, the SL 500 price starts from 117,096.

Thanks to its lightweight construction with an all-aluminium body shell (similar to that of the SLS AMG super sports car) and other measures, the weight of the new SL 63 AMG has been reduced by 125 kilograms (276 lb), contributing to a 30 percent reduction in fuel consumption and emissions for the vehicle which is 4612mm long, 1877mm wide (2099mm with the mirrors), 1316mm high, with a wheelbase of 2585mm.

Compared to the turbocharged 4663cc V8 engine of the SL 500 which develops 320 kW (435hp, 429 bhp) at 5250 rpm with 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) at 1800-3500 rpm, the SL 63 AMG performance (opposite table) is further boosted with an output of 395 kW (537 hp, 530 bhp) / 5500 rpm or 415 kW (564 hp, 557 bhp) / 5500 rpm with the AMG Performance package, from the larger 5.5-litre V8 twin-turbocharged (biturbo) petrol (gasoline) engine.

The AMG package is enhanced with special settings for the sports suspension (based on Active Body Control, ABC), the speed-sensitive sports steering, the high-performance compound brake system and the SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission.

Known for their exclusivity in terms of performance, styling and equipment, the AMG models are an institution in the Mercedes-Benz world.

The German brand says that for the SL model alone, over 26,500 SL AMG units with eight-cylinder engines were sold in the past ten years, including almost 5000 SL 63 AMG models with eight-cylinder naturally aspirated engines (2008 to 2011), and over 21,500 supercharged V8 SL 55 AMG between 2001 and 2007.

 V8: 395 kW

For the first time, the SL 63 AMG will be available with a choice of two power outputs.

In its "basic" configuration, the AMG 5.5-litre V8 'biturbo' (twin-turbocharged) engine delivers:

  • Output (maximum): 395 kW (537 hp, 530 bhp) at 5500 rpm;

  • Specific output: 72.3 kW (98.3 hp or 97 bhp) per litre (1000cc);

  • Kerb weight / maximum output: 4.67 kg per kW, 3.44 kg / hp, 3.48 kg / bhp;

  • Torque (max.): 800 Nm (590 lb-ft) of torque between 2000 and 4500 rpm;

  • Specific torque: 146.5 Nm (108.08 lb-ft) per litre (1000cc);

  • Kerb weight / maximum torque: 2.31 kg / Nm, 3.13 kg / lb-ft. ... >>>
