Aboul-Nasr: French car
maker Automobiles Peugeot will be presenting at this
year's Geneva motor show (8-18 March) two concept
cars, the GTi Concept
and XY Concept, representing the renewal of the brand's
representative in the B-segment (supermini,
sub-compact) category, the new 208.
Peugeot will also launch
its new 4008 crossover to represent it in the
compact SUV category. The new 4008 is based, like its brother the CitroŽn C4
Aircross (from the Peugeot-CitroŽn group, PSA), on the already known Mitsubishi
ASX. It will be launched
initially outside Europe (to the 4008 page
same wheelbase as the 207 but the body is 7cm shorter.
But, first things first,
the most important for Peugeot is the launch of its new model in the
B-segment, the 208, this spring at a starting price of Ä11,950
(France). That's is where the volume sales are, especially in Europe.
Peugeot 208 will replace the 207 with two distinct body
styles; 3- and 5-door, while another subcompact SUV
version (like the Nissan
Juke and the new Opel
is expected to replace later the station
wagon version of the previous model.
More compact front seat backs
add space for rear passengers.
project (internal code name of the 208) adopts the Peugeot-CitroŽn Group's platform 1, with reduced
overhang (dimensions announced for the 3-door body) at
the front (772mm, -6 cm compared with the 207)
and rear (652mm, -1 cm), along with the reduced weight
of 110 kg for the 208 compared to the 207 with the
same 1.4l HDi engine.
the wheelbase remains identical to that of the 207
(2538mm), the 208 body is 3962mm long (7cm shorter
than the 207), 1739mm wide (without the mirrors,
that's 2 cm narrower than the 207) and 1460mm high (1
cm lower than the 207).
Peugeot adds that the
more compact front seat backs and the design
optimisation provide more space for the rear passengers
(+ 5 cm knee room compared with a 207) as well as a
larger boot: 311 litres (10.98 cu. ft) of volume below
the rear shelf (285 dm3 VDA standard,
equivalent to (10.06 cu. ft) and up to 1152 litres
(40.68 cu. ft) volume (1076 dm3 VDA
standard, or 38 cu. ft) when the rear seats are folded.
Peugeot also claims that thanks to progress in terms of weight, improved
aerodynamics, new generation of 3-cylinder petrol
engines and other measures, its 208 sets a new milestone in the C02 performance of
Three diesel and five petrol
(gasoline) engines will be available with the new Peugeot 208, mostly with four cylinders each, except for the 3-cylinder
