New Peugeot 208 subcompact and 4008 crossover
Join the GTi and XY concepts at the Geneva auto show

New Peugeot 208, this spring from Ä11,950 (France prices).

21 February 2012, B. Aboul-Nasr: French car maker Automobiles Peugeot will be presenting at this year's Geneva motor show (8-18 March) two concept cars, the GTi Concept and XY Concept, representing the renewal of the brand's representative in the B-segment (supermini, sub-compact) category, the new 208.

Peugeot will also launch its new 4008 crossover to represent it in the compact SUV category. The new 4008 is based, like its brother the CitroŽn C4 Aircross (from the Peugeot-CitroŽn group, PSA), on the already known Mitsubishi ASX. It will be launched initially outside Europe (to the 4008 page >>>).

208: same wheelbase as the 207 but the body is 7cm shorter.

But, first things first, the most important for Peugeot is the launch of its new model in the B-segment, the 208, this spring at a starting price of Ä11,950 (France). That's is where the volume sales are, especially in Europe.

This new Peugeot 208 will replace the 207 with two distinct body styles; 3- and 5-door, while another subcompact SUV version (like the Nissan Juke and the new Opel Mokka also) is expected to replace later the station wagon version of the previous model.

More compact front seat backs add space for rear passengers.

The "A9" project (internal code name of the 208) adopts the Peugeot-CitroŽn Group's platform 1, with reduced overhang (dimensions announced for the 3-door body) at the front (772mm, -6 cm compared with the 207) and rear (652mm, -1 cm), along with the reduced weight of 110 kg for the 208 compared to the 207 with the same 1.4l HDi engine.

While the wheelbase remains identical to that of the 207 (2538mm), the 208 body is 3962mm long (7cm shorter than the 207), 1739mm wide (without the mirrors, that's 2 cm narrower than the 207) and 1460mm high (1 cm lower than the 207).

Top the Peugeot 208 dimensions page (interior and exterior).

Peugeot adds that the more compact front seat backs and the design optimisation provide more space for the rear passengers (+ 5 cm knee room compared with a 207) as well as a larger boot: 311 litres (10.98 cu. ft) of volume below the rear shelf (285 dm3 VDA standard, equivalent to (10.06 cu. ft) and up to 1152 litres (40.68 cu. ft) volume (1076 dm3 VDA standard, or 38 cu. ft) when the rear seats are folded.

Peugeot also claims that thanks to progress in terms of weight, improved aerodynamics, new generation of 3-cylinder petrol engines and other measures, its 208 sets a new milestone in the C02 performance of its vehicles.

 Engines

Three diesel and five petrol (gasoline) engines will be available with the new Peugeot 208, mostly with four cylinders each, except for the 3-cylinder 1.0- and 1.2-litre petrol engines which will be available for this summer.

The diesel engines are the:

  • 1.4-litre HDI PEF 50 kW (68 hp, 67 bhp), 160 Nm (118 lb-ft), with a 5-speed manual gearbox (98 g CO2 /km) or 5-speed robotised gearbox and Stop & Start (87 g CO2 /km);

  • 1.6 l e-HDi PEF 68 kW (92 hp, 91 bhp), 230 Nm (169 lb-ft), with a 5-speed manual gearbox, Stop & Start (98 g CO2 /km) or 6-speed robotised gearbox with Stop & Start (98 g CO2 /km (summer 2012);
  • 1.6 l e-HDi PEF 84 kW (114 hp, 113 bhp), 270 (199 lb-ft) or 285 with overboost (210 lb-ft) Nm, with a 6-speed manual gearbox and Stop & Start system (99 g CO2 /km).

The petrol options are:

  • 1.0 l VTi 50 kW (68 hp, 67 bhp); 95 Nm (70 lb-ft), with a 5-speed manual gearbox, 99 g CO2 /km (summer 2012);

  • 1.2 l VTi 60 kW (82 hp, 80 bhp); 118 Nm (87 lb-ft), with a 5-speed manual gearbox, 104 g CO2 /km (summer 2012);
  • 1.4 l VTi 70 kW (95 hp, 94 bhp); 136 Nm (100 lb-ft), with a 5-speed manual gearbox, 129 g CO2 /km;
  • 1.6 l VTi 88 kW (120 hp, 118 bhp); 160 Nm (118 lb-ft), with a 5-speed manual gearbox, 134 g CO2 /km;

  • 1.6 l THP 115 kW (156 hp, 154 bhp), 240 Nm (177 lb-ft), or 260 Nm (192 lb-ft) with overboost, 6-speed manual gearbox, 135 g CO2 /km (from this summer).

Besides the expected small 208 crossover SUV which should enter the expanding segment where the Opel Mokka is also joining soon,  other 208 versions should follow later, including a very probable 208 GTi and an upscale 208 version to compete with the likes of its PSA brother the CitroŽn DS3 and other premium subcompacts such as the Audi A1, the MINI, the BMW 1-series and others.
