82nd Geneva Motor Show
Peugeot urban hot GTi  and urban chic XY concepts

Peugeot 208 GTi Concept: front.

GTi Concept: the nostalgic bond with the iconic 205 GTi.

208  ...  4008

With the GTi Concept and XY Concept, Peugeot will be presenting at this year's Geneva Motor Show two of the most obvious facets of a dynamic small car targeted mainly, but not only, to the youth.

For the "2" series holds a very cherished place in the heart of the lion brand of Sochaux, since the days of the 205, the brand's saviour under the leadership of Jacques Calvet in the early eighties, to the succeeding 206, 207 and the 208 which will be launched this spring at a starting price of €11,950 (France prices).

GTi Concept: wider track and  a rear roof spoiler.

Hence, if the GTi Concept aims to renew the nostalgic bond with the iconic 205 GTi, one of the precursors of the GTi concepts in Europe (with the Golf GTi), the "Urban and Exclusive" XY Concept, as Peugeot puts it, will be here to vehicle the model's weight, not through the hot-and-chic GTi image, but in a rather premium chic dimension to boost the whole image of a volume seller such as the 208. The iconic sporty and luxury-oriented images are always here to serve the volume sales while adding a higher profit margin per unit sale, but the main point remains the same for a mainstream car maker, and that's volume.

GTi Concept: the spirit and colours of the original GTi.

In that sense, Peugeot says that the two concept cars that will be revealed in Geneva, "present two expressions of the marque's upmarket trend in the supermini segment".

The XY Concept is intended for city dwellers who are ready to pay more for an upscale small car, whereas the other concept addresses the GTi public who are also ready to pay more for the upscale image, but on the frankly sportier side.

 GTi Concept

That's why the GTi Concept represents what should be a performance version of the 208. It gets chequered-flag motifs on the grille, a lower bar with either the French Bleu-Blanc-Rouge (tricolore) flag, or the Union Jack in the UK, double chromed exhaust tailpipes, aero lower bodywork spoilers, lower sill skirt extensions and a brushed aluminium GTi Concept logo within the grille.

The interior of the 208 GTi Concept has stitched leather on the steering wheel and the sides of the gear lever, double stitching in the seats and LED backlighting for the surrounds of the instruments. The sports seats are trimmed with Nappa leather on the outer section, and cloth in the centre with an embossed tartan motif, and a leather head restraint.

The steering wheel has a pronounced lower flat section, with the GTi Concept logo in an aluminium ring. The roof lining is black and the pedals are aluminium while the Alcantara fascia capping has grey stitching. The centre console architecture and ventilation apertures all feature a graduated red to black effect, and the chequered-flag theme is also present on the aluminium door crossbars.

The GTi Concept is displayed with the Peugeot RCZ 1.6-litre THP 200 engine and a 6-speed manual gearbox. Maximum output is 147 kW (200 hp, 197 bhp) at 5800 rpm, with a maximum torque of 275 Nm (203 lb ft) at 1770 rpm.

Finally, the GTi Concept has a 36mm wider track at the front and at the rear (than a regular 208), a rear roof spoiler to generate down force at high speed and four brake discs (302mm diameter at the front and 249mm at the rear) with red-painted brake callipers.

Equipped with a 1.6-litre e-HDi engine (147 kW, 115hp, 197 bhp and 275 Nm, 203 lb-ft at 1770 rpm) and a 6-speed manual gearbox, the XY Concept comes with a crimson colour treatment applied to exterior bodywork and the interior.

208 XY concept instruments dials: bright, cosy and deep.

A special ‘Pulsion’ paintwork with precise application of sixteen coats of paint and lacquer makes the XY Concept appear to change depending on the distance and the position of the... beholder.

The passenger compartment is trimmed with crimson stitched leather on the dashboard, armrests, steering wheel rings, gear lever gaiter and sides, as well as stripes on seat inserts and floor mats, while the panoramic glass roof is edge-trimmed in black leather.

Pearly grey leather pleated seats feature five metal rings, which pinch and tighten the material. With the natural light from the panoramic glass roof and white ambiance lighting, the interior adds a ‘gunmetal’ treatment to the door crossbars, steering wheel decorations and vent trims.

The XY Concept rides on 18" alloy wheels, with coloured chrome decorating the panoramic glass roof trim. The lower window edge and the quarter panel are finished off with a special grille treatment with three horizontal chrome bars... >>>
