At launch, the new A3 will
be available with three
four-cylinder engines, all featuring direct injection, turbocharging, advanced thermal management and
a start-stop system. Audi says that compared to the previous model, fuel economy of the new
A3 was improved by about 12 percent on average.
The 1.4-litre TFSI petrol engine has a displacement of 1,395 cc (85.13 cu.
in.) and generates a maximal output of
122PS (90 kW, 121 bhp) with a maximum torque of 200 Nm (148 lb-ft) of torque, available from 1,500 rpm.
Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h ( 62mph) comes in 9.3 seconds, up to a top speed of
203 km/h (126mph). Its
combined fuel consumption is 5.2 l/100 km (equivalent to 54.3 UK mpg, 45.2
U.S. mpg and 19.2 km / litre), with CO2
emissions of 120 grams per km (193 g/mile).
rear seats are designed for three passengers.
The 1.8-litre TFSI petrol engine has a
displacement of 1,798 cc (109.7 cu. in) and generates a maximal output of 180PS (132 kW, 178 bhp)
with a maximum torque of
250 Nm (184 lb-ft) between 1,250 and 5,000 rpm.
Audi indicates that this engine has direct injection
with supplemental injection into the induction pipe, varies the valve
stroke based on load using the Audi valvelift system and utilises a thermal management system to quickly heat the engine after a
cold start. It enables the A3 to achieve the 0-100 km/h (62mph) in
7.2 seconds, with a top speed of 231 km/h (144mph) and a combined fuel
consumption figure of 5.6 l/100 km (equivalent to 50.4 UK mpg, 42 US mpg and 17.84
km/litre) and to 130g CO2 per km (209.2 g/mile).
The 2.0 TDI diesel engine has a
displacement of 1,968 cc. It features a high-performance thermal management
system with two balancer shafts. It generates up to 143PS (105 kW, 141 bhp) and 320 Nm (236 lb-ft) of torque, allowing the A3 2.0 TDI to
complete the 0-100 km/h (62mph) in 8.6 seconds, with a top speed of 216 km/h
(134mph). Its combined cycle test comes at 4.1 litre/100 km (equivalent to 68.9 UK
mpg, 57.37 US mpg and 24.4 km/litre), with CO2 emissions of 106 g per km (170.6
The engine offers will include later this year
another version of the 1.6 TDI engine, promising a combined fuel
consumption figure of 3.8 litre/100 km (equivalent to 74.3 UK mpg, 61.87
US mpg and 26.3 km/litre) with CO2 emissions of
99g/km (159.3 g/mile), in addition to other models with alternative propulsion methods such as hybrid, natural
gas and Audi e-gas (depending on markets), as well as the performance S3
version and a 1.4-litre
TFSI with cylinder on demand technology.
The standard gearboxes will be a six-speed manual
for the 1.4-litre
TFSI and 2.0-litre TDI engines and the seven-speed S tronic transmission
for the 1.8 TFSI. The dual-clutch transmission integrates a
freewheeling function in conjunction with Audi drive select.
All versions will have a front-wheel drive
first, before the quattro permanent
all-wheel drive becomes available later in the year, with its hydraulic multi-plate clutch which can
distribute power between the front and rear wheels when necessary... >>>
