In 140 markets between late 2012 and spring 2013

The new Chevrolet Trax: a global model except for the USA.

17 August 2012, Gaby Sakr: You may remember the recent world première of the new Opel Mokka small SUV, at the 82nd Geneva motor show last March.

Well, prepare now for the world première of one of its new structural brothers, the 2013 Chevrolet Trax, next month at the 2012 Paris motor show (Mondial de l'Automobile, public days from 29 September to 14 October).

First, the new Chevrolet Trax will be made in Mexico where it will be sold, as in Canada, from late 2012. It will reache the European roads, and many other markets around the world (140 markets says GM), from spring 2013.

Although Chevrolet is an American brand which belongs to the American GM (General Motors) group, the Trax will not be offered in the U.S., at least not in the foreseeable future, as the sales of the mid-size Chevrolet Equinox SUV may be affected there by the smaller, compact Trax.

The new Trax gets a boot volume of 358-litre (12.64 cu-ft).

However, rather than let the Trax get too close to the Equinox on the lower price bands, another structural brother of the Trax / Mokka will be available for the U.S. market, but at a higher price / equipment level... as the Buick Encore.

Coming to the Trax now, the new small crossover SUV will measure 4,248 mm (167.2 inches) in length,  1,776 mm (69.9 inches) in width, with a wheelbase of 2,555 mm (100.59 inches).

Representing Chevrolet’s first entry to the small SUV segment, the 5-passenger crossover SUV (lower medium / C segment size category in the European classification) will be available with three engines: two petrol (gasoline) choices with 1.4-litre (turbocharged) or 1.6-litre (atmospheric) displacements and a 1.7-litre turbodiesel.

The 1.4-litre turbo comes with a six-speed manual transmission, and delivers 140 hp (103 kW, 138 bhp) with a maximum torque of 200 Nm (147.6 lb-ft).

Like the Opel Mokka, the Chevrolet Trax will be available in either front- or all-wheel-drive (AWD) configurations. The AWD system is available on the Trax variants that come with the 1.4L turbo petrol or the 1.7L diesel engine.

The 1.7L diesel engine will deliver 130 hp (96 kW, 129 bhp) and a maximum torque of 300 Nm (221 lb-ft).

Chevrolet says that all powertrains with manual transmission come with Start/Stop functionality, and both the 1.7L diesel and 1.4L turbo petrol engine will also be available at later date next year with a six-speed automatic transmission.

Chevrolet adds that the new Trax provides a 358-litre boot (trunk) volume (12.64 cubic-foot), with several bins above and on both sides of the centre stack, as well as a tray under the passenger seat and further possible stowage available under the cargo floor.

In other practical terms, the 60/40 split rear seat comes in addition to a front passenger seat which can be folded flat (to be checked later according to versions and standard / optional equipment lists).

Upper versions will be equipped with a standard Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system that pulls content from smartphones onto a seven-inch colour touch-screen display. MyLink will also feature, from this winter, a navigation app which can be downloaded onto compatible smartphones to project the route calculated by the smartphone, onto the system’s touch-screen.

Chevrolet indicates that the new Trax will be equipped with six airbags, Electronic Stability Control (ESC) including Hill Start Assist (HSA), Traction Control (TC), an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD). The LT versions will get standard Trailer Stability Assist (TSA) and Hill Descent Control (HDC).

Additional details are expected to be announced at the 2012 Paris motor show, while price details will probably be announced nearer to the launch dates this spring.
