Volvo V40 Cross Country
Compact alternative between hatchback and XC worlds

V40 Cross Country: higher driving seat, larger wheels...

20 Sep. 2012, Gaby Sakr: Fifteen years after the launch of the Volvo V70 Cross Country, developing the niche of a specific crossover profile between what is known as the crossover SUV, based on passenger car platforms (in contrast to the traditional body-on-frame SUVs) and the estate wagon, the Swedish brand is adding now the new Volvo V40 Cross Country.

Based on the new V40 premium compact hatchback (replaces both the S40 and the V50), which debuted at the 2012 Geneva international auto show (8 to 18 March), the new V40 Cross Country fits in the C-segment (lower medium, compact), right under its larger V70 Cross Country brother.

Customer deliveries of the new five-door, five-seat V40 Cross Country are due to start in January 2013, and prices should be announced early next month, when order taking starts. As production begins in November at it Belgian plant in Ghent, Volvo Car Corporation expects to sell 17,000 Volvo V40 Cross Country units per year (around 50 percent in Europe and 30 percent in China).

The new V40 Cross Country, which will be one of the highlights of the 2012 Paris International Motor Show (Mondial de l'Automobile, public days from 29 September to 14 October), will get in all its versions a standard Start/Stop system to help reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, and braking energy regeneration. Other equipment (standard and optional lists should be checked depending on versions and markets) include Bluetooth hands-free communication, wireless music playing, City Safety auto-braking technology, the V40's world-first pedestrian airbag and the Pedestrian Detection technology.

 Position

While the XC family represents Volvo in the typical crossover SUV category (also based on the brand's passenger car platforms), the Cross Country line brings, on the other hand, "all-road versions of (Volvo's)... wagons and hatchbacks... When the Volvo XC-models... flex their muscles, the V40 Cross Country boasts a sleek ruggedness with its (specific) features integrated in the stylish design," says Lex Kerssemakers, Senior Vice President Product Strategy & Vehicle Line Management at Volvo Car Corporation.

The main visual and operational differences can be seen first in the driving seat of the V40 Cross Country being 40 mm (1.57 inch) higher than in the standard V40 hatchback, with wheels of the same size as the larger Volvo V70, including up to 19-inch rims, as well as a dark, contrasting front bumper with honeycomb mesh grille and upright Daytime Running Lights (DRL), contrasting sills on the side and at the rear, another contrasting bumper with integrated skid plate.

 Versatility

Interior lighting is designed to give a "theatre lighting" feel.

Since the cargo area is the main differentiating point of an estate-type car, the V40 Cross Country gets, on top of the foldable two-piece, 40/60 rear seat backrest, a cargo space which can be equipped with a hanging load net, as well as an optional soft safety net. The front passenger seat can also be folded forward (to be checked depending on versions and markets).

An optional versatile "extra" floor (with hooks for bags) in the load compartment should offer additional possibilities by folding it, up (to get a grocery holder), or away (for the best luggage volume), by using it as a flat floor (for load long objects) or by flipping it over to protect and maximize the volume. An additional concealed storage area lays between the upper and lower floors.

The driver can choose between several mood themes.

The storage compartment below the armrest comes with a connector for either USB/iPod or AUX, depending on the audio system. Two cup-holders and a 12V power outlet are integrated in the console in front of the armrest and the glove compartment includes space for two soft-drinks cans or bottles that are kept cool with cold air from the Electronic Climate Control system.

The interior lighting is designed to give a "theatre lighting" feel, with LED lamps positioned to light up strategic areas. The driver can select a red-to-blue setting that adapts the light to the interior temperature, or choose between seven other mood themes. The reading lights front and rear can be dimmed.

An optional TFT digital instrument cluster allows the driver to select one of three modes - Elegance, Performance or Eco - depending on what information he / she prefers to see while driving.

Another optional mobile application helps the driver stay in touch with the parked car via an iPhone or Android smart phone. An extension of Volvo On Call, the app offers a range of connectivity possibilities. It is free to download via the iPhone and Android app stores and is designed to connect the owner with the car from a distance. It allows users to view information about their car on their mobile phone, like checking fuel, wiper fluid or oil levels before starting a journey, or check whether the car has been locked.

 Petrol engines

The all wheel drive system is available with the five-cylinder 2.5-litre T5 turbocharged engine. Maximum output is 254 hp (187 kW, 250 bhp) with 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque, including 40 Nm (29.5 lb-ft) overboost delivered during acceleration.

The Volvo V40 T5 Cross Country comes with automatic transmission and accelerates from 0 to100 km/h (62 mph) in 6.1 seconds. The combined fuel consumption (EU) is 7.8 l/100 km (equivalent to 30.16 US mpg, 36.2 UK mpg and 12.8 km/litre conversions based on autopressnews.com figures).

The T5 is also available in a 2.0-litre version with 213 hp (157 kW, 210 bhp) and 300 Nm of torque (221.3 lb-ft) on certain markets (no further figures were provided yet).

The T5 V40 Cross Country also features Hill Descent Control, which controls the car's speed automatically when driving down steep inclines, with a Hill Hold function to help starting in a hill.

The T4 comes with a 1.6-litre GTDi engine with 180 horsepower (132 kW, 178 bhp) and maximum torque of 270 Nm (199 lb-ft), including 30 Nm (22.13 lb-ft) overboost. The combined fuel consumption is 5.5 l/100 km  (equivalent to 42.7 US mpg, 51.3 UK mpg and 18.2 km/litre), corresponding to CO2 emissions of 129 g/km.

A 2.0-litre five-cylinder T4 engine with 180 hp (132 kW, 178 bhp) and 300 Nm (221.3 lb-ft) of torque is available on certain markets.

The T5 version comes with a six-speed automatic gearbox, while the T4 is available with the automatic six-speed Powershift transmission or a six-speed manual gearbox.

The Powershift is a dual-clutch gearbox which operates like two parallel manual gearboxes with separate clutches, providing quick and fuel-saving gear changes.

 Diesel engines

The turbodiesel versions start with the five-cylinder 2.0-litre D4 which generates up to 177 hp (130 kW, 175 bhp) and a maximum torque of 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) across a wide rpm range. Acceleration from 0-100 km/h takes 8.3 seconds with the automatic gearbox (8.6 sec with the manual one). Fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are 4.4 l/100 km, equivalent to 53.4 US mpg, 64.1 UK mpg and 22.7 km/litre (117 g/km) with a manual gearbox and 5.2 l/100 km equivalent to 45.2 US mpg, 54.3 UK mpg and 19.2 km/litre (137 g/km) with the automatic (EU Combined).

The D3 comes with the 2.0-litre displacement, producing 150 hp (110 kW, 148 bhp) and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque.

Both turbodiesels are available with a six-speed automatic transmission or six-speed manual gearbox.

The 1.6-litre D2 version of the Volvo V40 Cross Country comes with CO2 emissions at 99 g/km, with a corresponding combined fuel consumption of 3.8 l/100 km, equivalent to 61.9 US mpg, 74.3 UK mpg and 26.3 km/litre. It generates 115 hp (85 kW, 113 bhp) and 285 Nm (210 lb-ft) of torque, including 15 Nm (11.1 lb-ft) overboost, and is mated to a six-speed manual gearbox with start/stop function.
