2013 North American International Auto Show in Detroit
BMW 4-Series Concept Coupe: A new name
For the 4-generation 3-Series two-door models

The BMW 4-Series: a clearer line of distinction.

19 Dec. 2012: BMW will implement the nomenclature change in its midsize cars category next month with the world debut of the BMW 4-Series Concept Coupe at the 2013 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

With the 4-Series model name, BMW is drawing a clearer line of distinction between the BMW 3-Series model (sedan, touring estate and X3 crossover) and its coupe and cabriolet (convertible) versions, which were known until now as the 3-Series Coupe and Convertible.

New 4-Series gets larger dimensions.

Hence, the new BMW Concept 4 Series Coupe, which is the fourth generation of the Bavarian brand's mid-range coupe, is for the 3-Series model what the two-door Audi A5 coupé and cabriolet are for the A4 model.

This puts the new 4-Series below the BMW 6-Series, which is the two-door representative of the 5-Series platform. Likewise, expect a 2-Series to play the same role later within the BMW 1-Series compact model.

The German luxury brand announced several dimensional indications of the new sports model, which will also have the M4 name for its M version. So, the wheelbase (2,810 mm) of the Concept 4 Series Coupe is 50 millimetres longer than that of the current 3 Series Coupe, with wider tracks at the front (1,545 mm, +45 mm ) and rear (1,593 mm, +80mm).

New 4-Series: bigger interior thanks to the longer wheelbase.

With its 1,826 mm width, the BMW Concept 4 Series Coupe is 44 mm wider than the current 3 Series Coupe, 16 mm lower (1,362 mm) and it is also longer (4,641 mm) than the current model (4.58 metre).

The new dimensions reflect a more accentuated sports character, all in the traditional BMW design identity, with a long wheelbase, long bonnet, set-back passenger compartment and short overhangs.

Further details and information will be announced at the 2013 NAIAS event, which will open its doors to the public from 19 to 27 January.
