Two months after it introduced the new 2015 Sonata at the New York International Auto Show last April, Hyundai Motor America added last week the 2015 Sonata Eco model, bringing the third engine variant of the midsize Sonata which goes on sale in the U.S. this summer.

The 2015 Sonata Eco should boost the Korean carmaker presence in the 4-door family sedan segment, as it will also be the first Hyundai to feature a new seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, mated to a 4-cylinder, 1.6-litre turbocharged gasoline (petrol) Gamma engine.

The other 2015 Sonata models get a 6-speed Shiftronic automatic / manual shift gearbox with 4-cylinder gasoline engines in either 2.4-litre (naturally aspirated) or 2.0-litre (turbo-charged) capacities.

Prices of the new Sonata Eco will start from a MSRP (manufacturer’s suggested retail price) of US$23,275 (all indicated prices exclude the US$810 freight charge), compared to the starting price of US$21,150 for the base model 2015 Sonata SE, US$26,525 for the Sonata Limited, up to US$28,575 for the Sonata Sport 2.0T.

In engine power and torque comparison, Hyundai indicates that the Sonata Eco's 1.6-litre turbocharged Gamma engine generates an estimated 177 horsepower and 195 lb. ft. of torque (264 Nm, 27 Kg-m), compared to 185hp and 178 lb. ft. (241 Nm, 24.6 Kg-m) at 4000 rpm from the 2.4-litre Theta II GDI, or 245hp and 260 lb. ft. (352 Nm, 35.9 Kg-m) of the 2.0-litre Theta II turbocharged GDI (you can see also the fuel consumption and driving range with the full fuel tank).
