Unveiling its design and performance tuning program for the new Ferrari 458 Speciale, German auto tuner Novitec Rosso described its exclusivity as being built on four cornerstones: power and torque boost by over 5% each, advanced tailor-made carbon fiber material, a high-performance exhaust system and specific high-tech forged rims with new suspension tuning, in addition to exclusive interior appointments.
First, Ferrari's mid-engined 458 Speciale gets various performance kits from Novitec Rosso, consisting essentially of recalibrated mapping for ignition and injection.
The highest of the tuning kits boosts the power output of the naturally-aspirated, 90° V8 by 5.17%:
- from 445 kW (605 hp, 597 bhp) / 9,000 rpm in the 458 Speciale,
- to 468 kW (636 hp, 628 bhp) / 9,250 rpm with the Novitec Rosso.
This output boost lifts the specific output of the 4,497cc (274.18 cu. in.) engine:
- From 99 kW (135 hp / 133 bhp) / 1,000cc in the Ferrari 458 Speciale,
- To 104 kW (142 hp / 140 bhp) / 1,000cc in the Novitec Rosso Ferrari 458 Speciale.
Torque isn't forgotten, as it grows by 5.93%, from 540 Nm (398.4 lb-ft, 55.08 kg-m) / 6,000 rpm in the standard Ferrari 458 Speciale, to 572 Nm (422 lb-ft, 58.34 kg-m) at 5,550 rpm in Novitec Rosso's special... Ferrari 458 Speciale.
Here, specific torque figures climb:
- From 120.2 Nm (88.7 lb-ft, 12.26 kg-m) / 1,000cc in the Ferrari 458 Speciale,
- To 127.3 Nm (93.93 lb-ft, 12.98 kg-m) / 1,000cc in the Novitec Rosso Ferrari 458 Speciale.
Converting these figures into road performance, Novitec Rosso indicate that its most powerful kit allows the Ferrari 458 Speciale to reach a new top speed "in excess of 330 km/h" (205 mph), compared to the original 458 Speciale's 325 km/h (202 mph), which comes with a 7-speed F1 dual-clutch transmission.
Exhaust - The German tuning specialist of Ferrari sports cars extends this evolution with a high-performance exhaust system that is designed to optimize: 1/ power output, 2/ sound quality and 3/ weight saving.
This exhaust system consists of two high-performance manifolds, sport catalysts and a rear muffler.
Featuring two matte black-coated tailpipes with a diameter of 100 millimeters, the exhaust system was specifically developed for the 458 Speciale.
Made from Inconel material (known in Formula 1 racing), Novitec Rosso indicates that its exhaust is also extremely heat-resistant and lighter than the production exhaust by seven kilograms (15.4 lb.).
Inconel is the trade name for a group of metal alloys (trademark of Special Metals Corporation) which are extremely resistant to oxidation and high temperatures. Most of the alloys have applications in the chemical industry (more about Inconel).
The sport exhaust can be ordered as a stand-alone option, or with a further high-performance exhaust option, which adds an electronic sound management system, allowing the driver to adjust the harmonics between a discreet note – on the way back from a downtown dinner for instance – or a more powerful motor racing style, all from the manettino switch on the steering wheel.
Body - For the active aerodynamics of the Ferrari 458 Speciale body, which is 4,571 mm long, 1,951 mm wide, with a wheelbase of 2,650 mm, Novitec Rosso says that its designers developed body components made from genuine carbon fiber materials (known for their light weight and high-strength), developed and tested in the wind tunnel.
At the front, the combination of the new spoiler and blade is designed, not only to customize the looks of the production bumper of the Ferrari, but also to reduce negative lift on the front axle, for a better directional stability at high speeds.
Other touches include the added fairings for the central air inlet in the bumper and the trunk (boot) lid to accentuate the racing look, in addition to the carbon-fiber moldings for the exterior mirrors and the door triangles.
On the sides, the Novitec Rosso profile brings specific styled rocker panels and carbon-fiber moldings with gill-shaped profile for the rear side windows.
To optimize aerodynamic balance, the negative lift has been reduced also on the rear-wheel drive axle, with a Novitec Rosso rear wing and a carbon-fiber diffusor featuring, like the production part, an electrically adjustable center section.
Novitec Rosso indicate that they also developed special air deflectors for the left and right air inlets on the rear side components, as part of the aerodynamic enhancements to optimize supply of cooling air for the engine, while also routing the relative wind directly over the rear wing profile.
The styling touch is completed with additional carbon-fiber applications such as the vent grilles or the fog lamp surround. The roof skin and the hood are also made of carbon fiber.
These carbon fiber elements can be matched with other tailor-made Novitec Rosso accessories, such as black tail lights with carbon-fiber covers, black turn signal repeaters and black auxiliary LED brake light.
Suspension - On the Magneride suspension side, the front of the Novitec Rosso Ferrari 458 Speciale can be raised by 40 millimeters at the push of a button in the cockpit, to drive over a curb or a parking garage ramp for instance, before it reverts to its original position, either at a second push of the button or automatically upon reaching a speed of 80 km/h (50 mph).
Additionally, the Novitec Rosso sport springs lower the ride height of the two-seater by some 30 millimeters, while the sport stabilizer bars should deliver even more direct handling.
Wheels and tires - Coming down to the road contact, Novitec Rosso says that the 21-inch NF4 forged rims (front and rear) were developed for the Ferrari 458 Speciale, with advanced forging technology allowing the nine and twelve inch wide alloys with double spokes to be among the lightest of their kind in this size.
Tires are Pirelli PZero high-performance in 255/30 ZR 21 and 325/25 ZR 21 sizes. In the standard Ferrari 458 Speciale front/rear sizes are 245/35 ZR20 (9'' wide) and 305/30 ZR 20 (11'' wide).
Interior - The crafted interior appointments by Novitec Rosso are proposed with leather and Alcantara, in a wide selection of colors and upholstery designs.
The exterior racing theme can be extended to the interior via carbon-fiber upper sections for the instrument panel and dashboard as well as longer carbon-fiber shift paddles for the steering wheel.
