The share of the different metals and strength levels in the structural body are shown in the opposite picture and legend.
The standard IntelliSafe technologies include, beside the City Safety auto braking functions (active safety to help prevent an accident from happening), the run-off road protection package.
In such cases, the front safety belts are tightened to keep the occupants in position, and the belts remain firmly tightened as long as the car is in motion.
To help prevent spine injuries, an energy-absorbing functionality between the seat and seat frame cushions the vertical forces (by up to one third, according to Volvo) that can arise when the car encounters a hard landing in the terrain.Pre-crash protection in rear impacts with rearward facing radars to detect an imminent rear impact, in which case safety belts are tightened in advance to keep the occupant in a good position, while lights start flashing to warn the driver behind, and the brakes are activated to help reduce the impact on the occupants.
This equipment comes with Volvo Cars’ new seat design, which integrates a new generation of Whiplash Protection System (WHIPS) for the neck.
Roll Stability ControlAll seven seats feature three-point safety belts with pre-tensioners, with improved Inflatable Curtain airbags for side impact or rollover protection.
The new XC90 comes with the latest generation Roll Stability Control as standard. If a risk of rolling over is assessed as high, engine torque is restricted and some braking force is applied to one or more wheels to counteract the rollover tendency.
If the rollover becomes inevitable, the Inflatable Curtains are activated, covering all three seat rows for an extended period of time to help prevent head injuries. All seven seats in the XC90 have pyrotechnical safety belt pre-tensioners that also activate in rollover situations.
